What does a Podiatrist treat?

Hey, this is Dr. Wagner Santiago here at InStride Gaston and Foot and Ankle and today I want to talk to you about different types of conditions that we treat. We all know that podiatrists treat things like ingrown toenails, fungal toenails, corns and calluses and heel pain. All those are very common conditions that we treat but I want to talk to you about the things that you might not know that we treat. For example, did you know that we treat a lot of diabetics, their wounds and any complications with the wounds? So if you have an ulceration that's due to a foot deformity, we actually treat those with different types of products. We treat it with casting; we even go as far as treating it with surgery, if necessary.

Another thing that a lot of patients don't realize we do is that we treat sports injuries! So you're common ankle sprains or toe sprains from playing soccer or football or basketball, they are very common out there and the tendency is for the patient to go to an urgent care or an emergency room. However, we can get you in here on the same day and we can treat you for those sprains. We have x-rays right on-site so we'll take the x-rays. We have the braces; we have the boots; we have all the things we need to treat you for an acute sports injury. If you happen to break a toe or a foot or an ankle, we also treat ankle fractures and foot fractures. We treat it either conservatively with with casts or boots, sometimes, unfortunately, it requires surgical solution to it. That's when we climb in there and take care of that as well and we do that as an outpatient surgery over at the hospital.

So those are some of the things that a lot of people don't realize that we treat. We love treating any kind of foot problems. Remember, anything from the ankle down, we treat. From skin to nails to bones.
