Why does the skin around my heels crack and split?

The skin in the heel and sole of the foot is thicker than anywhere else in the body as it is designed for weight bearing, grip, and shock absorption.

Since it is so much thicker it is harder to keep soft and also is prone to dry out easily. Most people do not hydrate the skin often enough. Second, lotions and some creams do not penetrate deep enough. Nor do they last long enough. In addition, there are other conditions  of the foot that help promote this problem. If these other issues are not addressed properly the skin can split open, crack, and become painful and possibly become infected. Further, the shoes and socks that a person wears can also influence and affect this condition. Proper identification of the cause is the most important factor in resolving this chronic recurring problem. Learn More!
